“For a mid life crisis, I decided to do not buy a souped up sports car but instead to revisit a teenage desire and learn how to play the guitar. A friend in England had quietly taken a batch of lessons before telling me and that inspired me to do something about it instead of just occasionally wanting to but not doing anything. I did the modern thing and looked up Google for Guitar tutors and started looking at what was on offer. I decided that I wouldn’t go for people doing it part time as I thought they may not be as focused or reliable. I looked instead for a tutor doing it as their main occupation. I also decided that I would like to use the Grade Exams as a carrot and so wanted someone that could lead me down that path.
Liking the look of the Edinburgh Guitar Studio description on the website, and desperate to keep the momentum I booked my first lesson in late January 2009 with Grant and immediately liked his style of teaching and his ability to get across the message of the moment. His easy going manner avoided what I had been worried about of taking up learning a difficult musical instrument with no inherent talent as a support! He only shouts at you for instance if you have not done your homework! No only kidding!
Despite making the learning process fun, he still takes the teaching seriously and ensures that if you put the effort in, you do improve and can get a lot of enjoyment no matter the standard you are at. Being able to transcribe his own Tab and having the ability to both write and teach the proper musical vocabulary means that you are learning an awful lot without even realizing it and is a great help at exam time. No matter your age if you would like to take up the guitar, don’t waste time and do it now! In my view you can’t go wrong with learning with Grant and I am happy to recommend him.
PS I lied! I bought a souped up sports car as well!”
Grant has been teaching me the electric guitar for roughly 2 years. When I started lessons, I was struggling to play basic tabs on the internet and was beginning to lose interest in the instrument. I'm now really enjoy playing, feel confident improvising and have even joined a band. The driving force behind this success is undoubtedly Grant's enthusiasm and passion for the music he teaches. His approach is patient and builds on simple ideas which progress in a logical fashion. The lessons provide a sound balance between theory, technique and learning / playing / jamming over songs I choose. I have also taken a guitar exam (and passed with distinction). Grant is happy to focus on a number of different styles of music and has opened my mind to a number of styles of music that I would not have discovered otherwise. It is quite often the case that as soon as I get home after a lesson, I want to play guitar. I would wholeheartedly recommend Grant as a teacher!
Grant has been my guitar tutor for over two years. Since I started with Grant my playing has improved significantly and my understanding of rhythm and music theory is constantly improving. His lessons are structured around developing your playing skills and developing your knowledge of music and the guitar. Every lesson is well planned but flexible and there is always fun in playing a piece of music of your choice.
He is very supportive and as a player who started later in life this is very encouraging, I just wish I had found him sooner. I would recommend Grant as a tutor for all skills and abilities, after a few lessons with him the improvements in confidence and playing are self-evident.
My ten year old son has been learning electric guitar with Grant and is getting great enjoyment and satisfaction from that. Grant makes the learning lots of fun for him and pitches the lessons at just the right level to keep challenging him. At the same time as learning the theory he is also gaining the skills needed to improve his technical ability and prepare him for future exams.
I've been playing guitar for almost 10 years now and in the last year, with Grant's help, I have significantly improved my technique, chord vocabulary, ear training and scales. Grant is professional and experienced and provides a fresh, personal approach to guitar lessons.
The tuition I have received from Grant over the last six months has taught me more about the guitar than I have learned in 15 years of self tuition. My playing ability and confidence as a musician has increased tenfold.
Grant is an excellent tutor who can teach you the most difficult practical abilities and musical theories and still leave you smiling at the end of the lesson.
"After having tried numerous guitar teachers on and off, over the years, I've finally found a perfect teacher with Grant. He tailors the lessons to my abilities and interests by planning them flexibly. Best of all he makes them interesting. He is very supportive and encouraging and I must admit that I am now playing better than I imagined possible.
